Over
one hundred ten years ago, WAHPERD (Wisconsin Association for Physical
Education Recreation and Dance) was founded in 1897. Since then,
teachers, coaches, professors, researchers, administrators, students and
other professionals have belonged to this great organization. For over a
century, WAHPERD leaders and members have been committed to enhancing
healthy lifestyles through quality physical education programs for our
children in the state of Wisconsin. Today, our mission is to provide
members with professional development opportunities and be advocates for
our professions of health, physical education, recreation and dance.
WAHPERD continues to be a member of the American Alliance (www.aahperd.org)
which continually strives to be a strong voice for members on
professional and legislative issues such as the No Child Left Behind
(NCLB) and the Carol White Physical Education Program – federal grant
money. Wisconsin has been one of the top three states receiving this
money to improve physical education programs. John Bennett is the
current AAHPERD president with the theme “Take time…Celebrate Life
Together!” So while celebrating life together, please take the time to
embrace my presidential theme for
2007-2008 “Be Happy, Be Healthy, Be an Advocate.”
From an organization point of view, there are many ways WAHPERD strives
to have members “Be Happy and Be Healthy.!” In addition, WAHPERD leaders
and members continue to “Be an Advocate” through local, state and
national advocacy efforts. The upcoming newsletters winter, spring and
summer will share more.
In summary, WAHPERD’s leaders continue to strive to keep up with the
changes and the demands in our fields. But to do so, we need each other.
To all of the current members as well as the future professionals, we
NEED you to “market” WAHPERD amongst your colleagues as well as
administrators, parents, school board members and policy makers. If you
want to know more about WAHPERD or how you could be part of the
leadership and this extinguished organization please contact me. Thank
you so much for visiting the webpage.
“Be Happy, Be Healthy, Be an Advocate!!”
Always moving,
Joanne Suomi
